Summer at Keeneland Itinerary

Keeneland is best known for its race meets each April and October, along with world-leading Thoroughbred sales in September, November and January. Even outside of these busy months, Keeneland is still a must-visit destination thanks to a variety of opportunities to experience this National Historic Landmark. Let’s take a look at some of the ways to enjoy Keeneland during their quiet season!

Note: This itinerary is a suggestion only and is based on a sample of what tours may be available in spring and summer of 2025. Each Horse Country tour requires that guests be ticketed in advance. Take an official tour of Keeneland

Keeneland offers a variety of experiences, three of which are regularly available throughout the summer months.

The Morning Works Tour highlights the storied past of Keeneland and its impact on the world’s equine industry. You’re likely to see horses training over the track, and learn more about how racehorses train for the races. The Morning Works tour is offered most days at 8:30am and 9am.

Keeneland’s Backstretch Tour combines the best of the Morning Works Tour with a more in depth look at the Keeneland stable area, or ‘ backstretch’. After watching horses train on the main track, you’ll visit the barn area where you might see horses getting a bath or receiving new shoes!

New for summer 2025, the Sunrise Tour is a unique opportunity to dive deeper into the world of training racehorses. You’ll learn all about the fascinating process of training horses, from beautiful vantage points overlooking horses exercising over one of the most famous racetracks in the world.

Eat at the Track Kitchen

After watching morning workouts, we recommend heading to Keeneland’s Track Kitchen to enjoy a Southern, homestyle breakfast. The Track Kitchen is often considered one of Lexington’s best kept secrets, serving breakfast, lunch, and most importantly, Keeneland’s famous bread pudding!

You might even see some of racing’s most well known trainers, owners and jockeys, who are known to frequent this beloved establishment.

The Keeneland Track Kitchen is open daily, from 6am – 1pm on weekdays and 6am – 11am on weekends.

Visit the Keeneland Shop

Located near the South Grandstand Entrance, the Keeneland Shop is the ultimate stop for apparel, homegoods and other items that celebrate horse racing and the Bluegrass. You’ll find Keeneland merchandise, along with locally-sourced goods that celebrate the best of what Kentucky has to offer.

Stop by the Keeneland Shop Monday through Saturday from 9am – 5pm.

Take in racing’s history at the Keeneland Library

Keeneland’s storied history continues at the Keeneland Library, the world’s largest repository of information about the sport of Thoroughbred horse racing. The Library is home to artifacts and exhibits relating to the history of the sport of horse racing and the state of Kentucky. It’s truly a one of a kind space that anyone with a passion for horses or history will enjoy.

The Keeneland Library is open from 8:30am – 4:30pm on weekdays.

Tour a nearby horse farm

Pair your visit to Keeneland with a tour of a nearby horse farm to learn more about Kentucky’s equine industry. There are many farms within just a short drive of Keeneland, including mare and foal nurseries, stud farms, training and adoption facilities, and more!
