One of the first nine counties that made up the Commonwealth of Kentucky when it became a state in 1792, Bourbon County is rich in history, from horses to bourbon and everything in between. Famed horses like Secretariat, Sunday Silence, Danzig (and more recently, Mage, Animal Kingdom and Serena’s Song) and others have called the rolling hills of Bourbon County home at some point in their lives. Come immerse yourself in the spirit of Paris, Kentucky with this day trip itinerary! TOUR Meet some of the drafts and donkeys at BraveHearts Equine Center, Kentucky’s largest draft horse rescue, and hear about how BraveHearts rescues, rehabilitates and provides sanctuary for their residents. On a tour of BraveHearts you’ll have the chance to get up close and personal with gentle giants like Belgians, Clydesdales and Percherons while learning more about their stories. BraveHearts Equine Center offers tours at 9am and 12pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. EXPLORE Take a stroll through Downtown Paris and enjoy all of the charms of small town Kentucky, from boutiques and shops to locally-owned restaurants and more. The Bourbon County Horse Walk of Fame can be found throughout downtown Paris, featuring horse shoes and nameplates of some of Bourbon County’s most famous equine residents from the past and present, including Hall of Famer Serena’s Song (Denali Stud), Breeders’ Cup winner Midshipman (Jonabell Farm) and of course, Triple Crown winner Secretariat. While walking down Main Street, be sure to stop at the Mini Eiffel Tower (for a bit of Parisian flair, just on a smaller scale) and Secretariat Park, and check out stores like All About Kentucky, Loch Lea Antiques and the Paris/Bourbon County Farmers Market. EAT Head down a few blocks to Trackside at the Depot, a local favorite known for its great menu and wide selection of bourbon. Trackside is located in the historic Paris Train Depot, which as originally constructed in 1882. Renovations have taken place throughout the years, while still maintaining the charm and history of this Bourbon County landmark. TOUR Take a tour of Denali Stud from 2pm-3pm to get a behind the scenes look at one of Kentucky’s leading Thoroughbred nurseries. You’ll walk between the barns and paddocks to meet mares & foals while enjoying the peaceful scenery of Bourbon County, all while learning more about the art of raising top racehorses. Denali Stud offers tours at 2pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, with 10am tours available on select dates. EAT Take a short drive down the road to Windy Corner Market for a bite to eat after your tours. This locally-owned and sourced restaurant is owned by local legend Ouita Michel, who also owns Wallace Station, Midway Bakery and more. Enjoy the comfort of home cooking (think burgers, sandwiches, salads, seafood and more) and pick up some souvenirs in the market to take the taste of Kentucky home with you. Horse Country’s Guide to the Keeneland Spring Meet April 2, 2025 As spring arrives in the Bluegrass, it’s time to make plans to attend the Keeneland Spring Race Meet, which begins on April 4! Whether you’re a lifelong racing fan or heading to the track for the first time, Keeneland is a can’t miss experience for anyone traveling to Kentucky in April. Keeneland’s spring meet is uniquely important to the calendar of racing as it also offers two prep races on opening weekend with the G1 Toyota Blue Grass and the G1 Central Bank Ashland. These races are a significant part of The Road to the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks, as the winners will earn enough points to guarantee a spot in the gate on the first weekend in May. P.S. Every guest who purchases a ticket for a Horse Country tour in April will receive a free general admission ticket for a day at the races, for each guest in their party. Thoroughbreds are like any athlete, and they work out on a regular basis to prepare for their next race. You might see horses out for a casual jog or completing a more serious ‘breeze’ before they compete in an upcoming race. After watching morning workouts, we recommend heading to Keeneland’s Track Kitchen to enjoy a Southern, homestyle breakfast. You might even see some of racing’s most well known trainers, owners and jockeys, who are known to frequent this beloved establishment. Place Your Bets Wagering can be a fun way to add some excitement to your day at the races, even if you’re not a seasoned handicapper! BETologists are the resident experts on betting the races at Keeneland. There are a few stations around the track (and the Hill, for those who enjoy tailgating!), where BETologists provide helpful tips about reading the program, how to wager and more. Just look for the folks in the fedoras! Race Day ‘Musts’ On a race day at Keeneland, there are so many things to see, enjoy and experience in the warmer weather. A great option for an afternoon snack at the races is their signature kettle corn or popcorn! If you’re in need of a sweet treat then head over to the Ice Cream Shoppe, located on the second floor of the Grandstand, which offers soft serve ice cream and candy. It’s great to see the contenders up close, especially during stakes races when top horses from around the world are competing! Go Behind the Scenes Did you know that Keeneland offers tours of their facility, which has been designated as a National Historic Landmark? There are a few different ways to go behind the scenes at Keeneland and learn about its history and current operations. The Keeneland Morning Works Tour and Backstretch Tour are both offered early in the day, when horses are training on the track. The Keeneland Owner’s Experience is a truly one of a kind experience, giving guests a feel of what it is like to be a Thoroughbred racehorse owner on race day.
