Meet 11 retired Thoroughbred racehorses who are living out their days in peaceful retirement in the midst of the beauty that is Chestnut Hall Farm in Oldham County Kentucky – a mere 30 minutes from downtown Louisville.
You will be greeted at the Barn at Chestnut Hall where you will learn about the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) and the Thoroughbred Aftercare industry that cares for these majestic equine athletes after their racing careers end.
The TRF tour guide will lead you on a walking tour to visit three pastures around the farm where you will have the opportunity to interact with the horses (who love having their photos taken!) and experience the tranquility of “horses being horses”.
The tour will conclude on the porch of the historic farmhouse at Chestnut Hall, with a phenomenal view overlooking the horses and inspiring you to learn more, and hopefully to visit again soon!

ABOUT TRF AT CHESTNUT HALL
Established in April 2021, the TRF Sanctuary Farm at Chestnut Hall introduces the Louisville community, neighbors from across the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and visitors from around the world to the beauty and magic of Thoroughbred horses. This beautiful 25-acre farm in Prospect, KY serves as the “forever home” for retired Thoroughbred racehorses from the national herd of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation.
The horses serve as ambassadors for Thoroughbred aftercare, educating racing fans and the community at large about these equine athletes and the importance of providing a “soft landing” to transition them to the next chapter of their long lives when their racing careers are over. Throughout the year, TRF welcomes visitors to Chestnut Hall for tours and special events to meet the horses and learn about the lives of Thoroughbred racehorses and the many gifts they bring to the communities where they live.
Most horses under TRF care have suffered career-ending injuries that make them suitable only for quiet retirement in pasture. However, many TRF horses are successfully retrained and adopted into homes where they begin new lives as pets, competition horses, police mounts, or equine-assisted therapy partners.
The TRF is also known for its pioneering Second Chances Programs. The closest one is located at Blackburn Correctional Complex. TRF retired Thoroughbreds are paired with incarcerated individuals, offering a unique opportunity for both horses and humans to find purpose and healing. Through this program, inmates learn valuable life and vocational skills in horse care and farm management, while the horses receive the compassionate attention they deserve. This transformative initiative highlights the powerful bond between humans and horses, creating second chances for all involved.
